Pregnant Battered Women: With Core Content on PTSD

Course Description: There is evidence of an association between battering and pregnancy. Battering of women is an underreported crime with major health consequences. Domestic Violence is the leading cause of maternal mortality. Battering frequently begins or escalates during pregnancy or the postpartum period.

Many pregnant battered women are unaware of resources available to them. After September 11th, our country turned its attention towards a mental condition that has afflicted more than 20,000,000 million Americans: PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

Over half of these individuals are women and many are mothers or are pregnant.

Our society now expects human service providers to possess a basic knowledge and expertise regarding PTSD. Many women, as well as mothers or those that are pregnant, are predisposed to PTSD through rape, domestic violence, and cultural learned helplessness. Mothers who have PTSD can affect parenting dynamics leading to risk factors for their children's developmental stages.
